Cozad Family Journal
Cozad was originally spelled Cossart when the family first came to America, the name being at this time German. In their native French, the" t" was not pronounced, but ended as with an "r". Others changed their Cossart name to Cosad, Casad, Cossat. First Generation Second Generation Third Generation Fourth Generation Fifth Generation Sixth Generation Seventh Generation Eighth Generation Ninth Generation Tenth Generation
Originally, Cozads were French Hugenots from northern France. (Hugenots were protestants persecuted by the catholics.) There is said to still be a Catholic branch of this family living there near Rouen, France. During the time of religious persecution by the Catholics through the 17th century, many of the family perished. Others fled to Switzerland, Germany, Holland, England, Scotland and the American colonies, specifically New York, the Carolinas and Massachuesetts.
The branch that came through Holland to the Americas in 1662 from France includes the first immigrant, Jacques Cossart.
My thanks to my new found Cozad relatives : Marsha Pilgner, (stay tuned, she is publishing a huge book on Cozads!!!) and Marilyn Cozad and Paula Cadwell-Lepine and Jeanine Bass, whom without I would never have gotten this far!

More Cozad Trivia: On Robert Henri
A famous American artist, Robert Henri, is related in this way:
Robert Henri's name was originally Robert Henry Cozad. Robert was born in 1865. His
father was John Jackson Cozad (born 1830), and his Grandfather was Henry Cozad of
Upshur, VA. His great grandfather was Job Cozad, who appears as #176 in this journal,
was the brother of Jacob Cozad # 156....
Robert and his father, Henry Cozad, is the man portrayed in the "Son of the Gamblin' Man"
(Henry is the gamblin' man). Henry Cozad had made a fortune in the real estate business as
well as gambling. He had already founded couple of other towns, and was working on
Cozad, Nebraska. In an argument with a worker in the construction of a bridge, Henry shot
and killed the man. He and his family fled back east, where they changed their name to Henri.
At any rate, John Henri's great grandfthar was Andrew Jackson Cozad's grandfather's
brother. I guess that makes him sort of a 3rd cousin... at any rate, here is a picture of him, I
think he really looks like a Cozad!

More Cozad Trivia Info:
I got this information from a copy of "The Border Settlers of Northwestern Virginia from 1768
to 1795". I am briefly reiterating it in my own words: This Jacob that was abducted was
brother of Samuel, father of Andrew Jackson, father of George Alvin.
On July 26, 1794, William, Jacob, Benny and David were bathing in Hacker's Creek about
three quarters of a milebelow the village of Berlin, W. Virginia. The indians snuck up on the
boys and captured them. As they were being led away, the youngest, Benny who was only 6,
cried out for his mother. One of the Indians seized him by the heels and killed him by striking
his head against the roots of a huge beech tree. He was then scalped and his body left there,
where it was buried, and which is not the Morrison Cemetary on the old Cozad homestead.
During his capture the Indians were trying to make a warrior out of him. This included
climbing a bee tree amidst angry bees to get the honey and being sent in the dead of winter into
the forest to get wood, naked and wet. Apparently this schooling was common to all indian
boys to make them warriors.
He had been adopted by a Chief's family. He had saved his Indian "mother" from a
rattlesnake and she from then on favored her captive son. At one time the tribe was preparing
to burn him at the stake after a crushing defeat by Wayne's army in 1794. He was permitted to
bid farewell to his friends assembled to witness his death. At this time, an indian woman
silently snuck him away and hid him in another family's wigwam and covered him with
blankets. Later, two of his indian brothers took him to another village. After the anger died
down, which purportedly was also encouraged by barrels of whiskey, he was no longer
mistreated. Jacob said his foster father was very fond of him, when he was not intoxicated.
Jacob Jr. was held until the next year, where he was found at Sandusky by his older brother
(possibly our Samuel, father of Andrew Jackson Cozad)) and brought home.
